Why Green Wrestlers can taste so ripe
From an experienced wrestler’s point of view, grappling with new girls or girls who have little to no experience on the mats can be mind numbing. Trying to have a competitive match with someone who is nowhere near your skill level can make a 30 minute match seem to really lag. Training someone who is nowhere near your skill level, on the other hand, can be quiet thrilling. People who are new to something and know they are not very good are more open minded to the fact that they do need training. In the industry we call newbies “green” because they are not ripe for the pickings yet but they have all that potential be be big and juicy fruits of labor. A lot of trainers I speak with have confirmed that they prefer taking on women as opposed to men because women tend to be more open to learning where men often get cocky and think they know everything and end up not listening to the instructor or back talking a lot. I personally have found that green girls are a lot more willing to take advice than veterans are willing to take advice. Now there are exceptionss to this of course. Girls like Robin for Lesfemmefatale.com is always ready and willing to learn anything and everything someone can teach her. She is also willing to teach anyone anything she can. I, myself am also always willing to listen to a potential teacher if he or she is willing to show me a trick or new technique or improvement on what I already know.
Some girls are stubborn however. You can watch them in a match and see them make the same mistake 5-10 times( and 20% of the time it will work for them) but I will show them how to fix it and they will look at you and say “Well what I do is working for me so I don’t need to fix it”. Uuugh this really irks me. If I’m giving advice I’m not doing it for my health. I am really trying to help you. If something has been working for you 20% of the time that means that it’s not working 80% of the time. the 20% it is working is when you’re against someone who doesn’t know what they are doing. The best thing to do is drill the CORRECT technique 100-200 times until you get it down.
It’s awfully frustrating for someone who is trying to help to be shot down. It’s insulting, disrespectful and doing no good to anyone. I won’t name names but I will say this. If you’ve noticed girls who seemed to have stayed at the same level for the last several years without improving at all…..you will know to who I am referring.
As with anything in life, it is best to enter new and old adventures with an open mind, a willingness to learn and a willingness to share what you have learned. If anyone has constructive criticism we should all listen and learn. In that respect we all need to learn how to give criticism in a way that will make the other person not feel attacked, beat up or put down in anyway. Communication is key, it’s very hard but it is key to improvement.!
